Silica exposure assessment

Countertop fabricators, foundries, concrete products and glass plants carry O. Reg. 490/09 duties for silica. We write the assessment with your JHSC, set up the control program and run the air monitoring.

Why silica is in focus

Engineered stone can be up to 95% silica, and Ontario's Ministry of Labour issued a safety alert on silica exposure during countertop manufacturing and installing in 2023, updated in May 2025.

What you need on file

  • A written exposure assessment made with your joint health and safety committee
  • A control program where health may be affected: wet cutting and ventilation, work and hygiene practices, training
  • Air monitoring by or under a qualified hygienist, results posted for 14 days and kept 5 years
  • Medical surveillance arranged with your physician
  • A respiratory protection program if respirators are in use

Price

Assessments run $2,500 to $7,500 depending on processes. A control program is $2,000 to $5,000 and an exposure monitoring day is $1,400. The Workplace Exposure Program keeps it all current from $299 a month.

Who does the monitoring

Monitoring is done by or under our qualified occupational hygienist. Medical surveillance is done by your physician; we coordinate the records.
